The Cabin

Offering lodging on the famed Muskegon River, one mile downstream from the Croton-Hardy Dam. The Cabin is located on 20 wooded acres with 550’ of direct access river frontage. Trails suitable for hiking or biking are carved into the woods on the property, including a rare Michigan Prairie.

The Cabin sleeps six - a king size bed on the sleeping porch, two twins in the back bedroom, and a queen size sleeper sofa. A well stocked kitchen awaits, and a washer and dryer, new in 2019. An outside patio includes a propane grill.  The average rate is $125 per night, but is discounted for a week's stay.  We charge a cleaning fee for each stay. Booking and up to date rates are on VRBO.com; click the link above for "Book Now".

The River

The Muskegon River is, according to Orvis, "–a tailwater fishery of western scale and beauty".  It is forested along most banks, and has gravel bottoms, both deep and shallow. Suitable for wading and boating.  Families like to kayak and tube on the river, but there are always fly fishers in the water.

There are prolific runs of steelhead and Chinook salmon seasonally (Steelhead October through May) to challenge your skills.  Warmer weather brings active populations of both brown and rainbow trout, with new river stocking in 2019.   Rental kayaks are available close-by, offering a four-hour paddle on an easy (but sometimes fast) flat river. Also available are tubes for a lazier float! If you own a boat, bring it! The public boat launch is just down the street.

The Cabin at the River is in a wooded area, very peaceful to best appreciate the magificence of the river and the woods. But it is far from isolated. Our favorite dining spots (and to get some espresso) are Hit the Road Joe near Croton, and the Riverstop in Newaygo.  The Cabin is located 45 minutes north of Grand Rapids, known for its art scene and local breweries. A minor league baseball team plays about a half hour from The Cabin. Or go west and spend a day on the breathtaking beaches of Lake Michigan. Like the ocean, but no salt or sharks or jellyfish.
